Chris Barngrover is a Senior Director of AI Engineering at Shield AI. He is the Technical Lead of the Hivemind AI research group, previously leading the Scene Understanding, Scalable Learning, and AI Foundations teams. Prior to joining Shield AI, Chris was part of the unmanned systems group at Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC), where he worked on numerous projects across the domains of unmanned systems (land, air, sea, underwater). Chris holds a dual Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Mathematics from Purdue University. He earned his MS and PhD from UCSD in Computer Science Engineering, with a focus on machine learning and computer vision for robotics. Chris has extensive experience in developing AI systems for national security from autonomous base defense ground vehicles to GPS-denied autonomous boats to leading a project to develop automatic recognition of sea floor mines using an unmanned underwater vehicle.
