AI Foundations

The AI Foundations team is focused on enabling model-based systems engineering for edge-level artificial intelligence through scalable architectural design. The team works to enhance reliability of autonomy at the edge and to develop foundations around configuration, communication, and platform abstraction for the portability of our company's AI capabilities across computational platforms.

Scene Understanding

The Scene Understanding team is focused on leveraging machine learning approaches for adding contextual information to the world model that is generated by our autonomous systems. The team develops multi-modal detection and localization of large sets of high-value objects and classification of environment contexts to inform executive planning and to improve user experience.

Scalable Learning

The Scalable Learning team is focused on the creation of data pipelines for data transformations and processing. They are responsible for providing applications on Shield AI's Hivemind platform that enable Shield AI's other AI teams to better execute their charters using data analysis, learning, and experimentation.

Global Reasoning & Executive Planning

The Global Reasoning and Executive Planning team is focused on developing, maintaining and implementing robust autonomous behaviors and executive planning architecture on Shield AI's robot systems. The team seeks to enhance user experience through reduced user cognitive load by developing robotic systems which reliably execute complex missions, autonomously selecting and executing the optimal task sequence to achieve mission objectives.

Trajectory Planning & Control

The Trajectory Management and Control team is focused on developing and maintaining a robust, high-performance trajectory generation and management system to enable safe, predictable, robust, and fast flight in complex environments. The team researches, develops, matures and applies state-of-the-art algorithms, processes, and tools to support the development of best-in-class planning and control solutions.

State Estimation

The State Estimation team is focused on creating fast, efficient, maintainable, robust, precise, and accurate state-estimation systems. The team aims to develop state estimation systems that continually self-improve using collected field data. They work closely with teams across Shield AI to collaboratively solve cross-disciplinary problems such as connected systems design, including sensors selection and placement.


The Mapping team is focused on the development of a scalable, precise underlying environment model. Their product is the environment representation that enables applications such as motion planning, scene understanding, and user-experience. Additionally, the team develops probabilistic sensor models for simulation and exploitation, as well as strategies for preprocessing raw sensor data to make it more amenable for downstream use.


The Simulation team is responsible for the creation of realistic synthetic environments. The simulated environments the team builds and generates are used to train and test robotic systems to reduce the time and cost of real world testing. The Simulation team enables our company’s AI engineers to simulate flights in synthetic environments, generate training data for training robots, and detect bugs before they reach real flight testing.

User Experience Design

The User Experience Design team is focused on designing and enhancing the user experience of all products and solutions. The team designs user interfaces and interactions, and identifies opportunities for human-robot collaboration that enhance AI capabilities and guide next generation hardware development.

Software Engineering

Core Engineering Services & IT

The Core Engineering Services (CES) & IT team is dedicated to providing reliable core infrastructure for innovation and improving the efficiency of Shield AI teams. The team develops and implements engineering procedures, systems, services and software that provides the underlying foundation to drive all Shield AI successfully forward.


The Operational Security team performs a variety of functions to ensure that Shield AI's employees and products are safe, secure and protected. The team is focused on developing processes and procedures which ensure data, infrastructure and endpoint protection, and maintaining industry best practices. The team frequently collaborates across the Shield AI organization to advise on how to securely implement capabilities.

Web & Data

The Web & Data team is focused on building and maintaining frameworks for data collection, analysis and visualization, including the maintenance and support of cloud infrastructure. Through infrastructure which capitalizes upon Shield AI’s artificially intelligent products’ self-directed learning, the team improves Shield AI product performance and reliability.

Mobile Software

The Mobile team creates mobile applications aimed at delivering a simple, intuitive, and reliable interface between human operators and AI-powered robotic platforms. It is responsible for Nova Controller, the mobile application that communicates real-time data to the user and allows for command and control of Nova. The team's focus is on building solutions that provide visibility and mission-critical information to service members.

Hardware & Platform Solutions Engineering

Platform & Systems Software

The Platform & Systems Software team designs and implements high-performance software solutions that support Shield AI’s technology. The team is focused on creating, maintaining, and improving the firmware, kernel and system software used by Shield AI’s products and solutions.

Mechanical Engineering

The Mechanical Engineering team is focused on the design, integration and application of parts, mechanisms, materials, technologies and processes to realize the creation of Shield AI’s robotic systems. The team is also responsible for thermal engineering and aerodynamics. The team evaluates process technologies, design, and production methodologies to ensure fast, efficient, and effective execution of programs.

Electrical Engineering

The Electrical Engineering team designs, integrates, and sustains the electronic systems for all Shield AI products, including the computing, communication, sensing, power, and propulsion systems.

Product Development

Product Management

The Product Management team is focused on driving product development, service, and sustainment. The team is responsible for the development of program schedules and the establishment of product direction based upon considerations such as company vision, customer needs, market dynamics, and engineering capability. The team works to direct quick, efficient, and effective transition of engineering designs to production in order to deliver quality products which delight customers.

System Integration Verification and Validation

The System Integration Verification and Validation (SIVV) team manages Shield AI’s system-level integration, verification, and validation processes. The team owns the creation and execution of test plans which assess product performance  in varying conditions, including those outside of the operational envelope of the product. The team seeks to provide Shield AI with complete understanding of the limits of our products and their larger subsystems.

Operations & Production

The Operations & Production team is focused on the manufacturing and assembly of all hardware associated with Shield AI’s products. The team continuously improves processes and methods to deliver products that delight customers. The team establishes process controls for building quality into Shield AI's products and resolves any quality issues that may arise through the application of root cause analysis and problem-solving tools.
