Supporting Japan’s Evolving Autonomy Needs with Unprecedented Speed
Shield AI and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) integrated Hivemind onto an Affordable Rapid-Prototyping Mitsubishi-Drone (ARMD) and completed advanced flight tests in under 60 days, accelerating the path to real-world deployment.

Background
Shield AI and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) partnered to demonstrate a faster path to fielding autonomous airpower, addressing one of the biggest challenges in autonomy: the lengthy timelines required to integrate and validate capabilities on real aircraft. Traditionally, moving from software development to flight testing can take years due to complex integration, testing infrastructure, and platform constraints. By combining Shield AI’s Hivemind autonomy with MHI’s deep expertise in aerospace systems, the team set out to prove that this timeline could be dramatically compressed.
Through close collaboration, Shield AI and MHI rapidly integrated, tested, and transitioned autonomy from simulation to real-world flight. The effort moved from software-in-the-loop (SIL) to hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and ultimately to live flight testing in a matter of weeks, culminating in successful autonomous flights in under 60 days. This milestone highlights a new model for autonomy innovation, where advanced AI and strong partnerships enable faster, more flexible deployment of mission-ready capabilities.
ChallengeMHI faces aggressive timelines and must rapidly transition advanced mission autonomy from simulation to live flight while maintaining operational safety and performance confidence. |
SolutionMHI integrated Hivemind, Shield AI’s mission autonomy software, onto its platform to accelerate development and testing while ensuring safe deployment in real world conditions. |
ResultsFrom initial training to live flight tests in under 60 days (including a rapid progression from SIL to HIL in under two weeks and HIL to VIL in under two weeks), MHI set a new pace for autonomous airpower development. |
